I've asked these two couples to stop smoking for extended periods of time on their balcony as the smoke enters my entire living room but no avail. I have asked very nicely and I do not like getting into petty arguments however I will not stand for second hand smoke due to someone else's inconsiderate attitude.

I am thinking of buying an industrial fan to blow the air back into them on my balcony as a solution as my landlord understands the problem however he states there is nothing he can do as he does not own the attached private house next door.

Any other suggestions before I take this route to solve my issues? These people literally smoke on the balcony for about 2 hours filling my entire living room with smoke. It's not like a quick 5 minute break, but sitting out there for hours talking and chain smoking.

I will definitely put the fan. And if they complain, you can said that you are not going to take their smoke into your environment.

A shared balcony? I wonder if your neighbors would appreciate a complaint to the city (I know if it was me, and they weren't responding to calm reason, they could count on my making that complaint).

Are there any HOA rules covering the situation?

Not sure why it was necessary to specify that the neighbors were Greek. What's the difference? There really isn't much you can do about it....they live there, and should use their balcony to smoke if they choose to...that's one of the negatives of city-life.

Just use the fan.

NY doesn'tt have HOA's here.

But I would do the fan thing. Oh hell yeah !!

This is yet again, why while having a terrace, balcony or outside space is nice, but I would never want a shared space, and this is the exact reason why, but since I am Greek, I will change it to Russian, since 99.9 percent of the Russians in my neighborhood smoke.
UGH !!!

What does it matter if they're Greek?

I sympathize - I have a few men in my building that smoke in the hallway sometimes, and leave the butts all over the floor. Unfortunately, not much we can do about it.

This might not be legal but you could always buy some stink bombs and drop them on your balcony while they are out there. It would suck for you at first but a few times might be all that's needed for them to learn a lesson.
