Hi everyone -

Today I received a dream job offer on Long Island. My husband and I were planning to move to Northern New Jersey on August 1st because he has a job in South Orange, NJ ... now, naturally, we have to revise this plan because I'll be commuting to Suffolk County (dream jobs for both of us - not an option for one of us to quit).

I know the commute will be horrible (I'm willing to do up to 60-90 minutes each way by car; he is willing to do the same as along as he can be on a train), but I'm looking for advice about where we should consider living that will make this possible (and keep our sanity?). The good news is he only has to be in the office 2-3 days a week and I only have to be in the office 4 days a week (and my hours are somewhat flexible, so I can avoid the worst of traffic).

We've been told we should consider Astoria and other parts of Queens. We could use a bit more direction than that.

A couple of things:

* We have two cars, and we need to keep at least one of them ... so we'd like somewhere where parking isn't a complete nightmare (I lived in Philly for a spell so I can put up with some inconvenience, but complete nightmare - that, I'd like to avoid)

* We have a small dog - so we're going to want to be somewhere "dog-friendly" (meaning, nearby parks, etc.)

* We want to be near a train line so that my husband can get to Penn Station to get on NJ Transit; likewise, it would also be nice to be somewhere that it is easy to hop on the highway for my commute

* We're looking to spend $1500-$2000 a month (give or take) - we'd like to have a 1 bedroom w/den or a 2-bedroom (we need a home office - it's why we don't have to go in every single day)

* We'd like to be in a fairly safe area - okay enough that I can walk the dog alone at night

This was obviously dropped on us in the last day and neither of us have lived in the NYC region before - any advice, tips, thoughts would be helpful. We expect we're going to, given the short timeline, have to work with a broker - but I'd love to have some perspective on areas before we contact one.

hard to say where might be good since you dont say how far out in sufflok you are. but two possibilities come to mind. first is someplace like forest hills or rego park in queens where you can get a 2 bdrm for $2000, though some bldngs wont have parking --you'd have to find a place to garage the car-- and some will give you a hard time about the dog. you'd have to look around. but timewise its easy access to for hubby to get to penn station and out to jersey in 90 minutes, and you'd have easy access to the highways to get out to the island, especially if you dont have to do rush hour.

second thought might be to move a bit closer to the city in queens to a neighborhood like Sunnyside, where there are also 2 bdrms in your price range. he'd be but a hop skip and jump away from Penn Station but you'd have a slightly longer drive. but again, I dont know about dogs and parking. maybe some other poster here has better ideas.

have you considered the possibility that maybe you can both train it and ditch the cars altogether? that would be a saving as the monthly fares would still probably cost a lot less than gas, insurance, tolls, and garages. BTW, such separate dream jobs with such irregular office hours--are you two academics?
