If you live outside of Manhattan, in one of the boroughs, it is relatively common for people to own a car as street parking is more available, parking lots are much cheaper, and lots of homes have driveways/covered or garage parking.
In the city, I keep a sedan for use in NYC and surrounding region. I am a member of ZipCar, but it works out better for me to have my own vehicle. However, I should note that I prefer to walk where possible. I keep a bicycle in the city, too, but only for use in the park, as I don't like to ride on the street.
I had thought about bringing a scooter or motorcycle with me, but just am not sure that it's the environment in which I would feel comfortable riding. That, and it can be enough of a hassle to find bicycle parking, much less legally parking a scooter.
