I lived at Newport...terrific place and you strollaround at 3AM in perfect safety and the quickest trip into Manhattan imagineable, 24/7. The population is mixed but largely well-employed Asians, mostly Indian. Without doubt it is the presttiest part of the City with magnificent City views and a lovely Waterfront walkway.

Grove area is pretty nice, gentrifying but almost as pricey as Newport. It's sort of Brooklyn Heights meets East Harlem...a bit of a culture clash

Journal Square cheaper and far from gentrified. Not too bad.
