Norwood (Hull,205th )is ok too but not as nice as Bedford Park,Pelham Parkway,Morris Park.It should be a little less expensive but it might not be.

Stop trying to scare people. Riverdale, Woodlawn and Marble Hill arent bad neither are parts of Inwood/Wash Heights. Also btw lots of students and twenty-somethings make it work in Fordham(really Belmont) so why cant the OP and her roomies do the same?

Not a big fan of university personally. Not even talking about safety per se but lots of quality of life issues there. You gotta do your footwork and homework with the BX. Lots of good deals but you gotta be careful.

Yeah, that's what I'm finding out. We're going to investigate in person as many times as we can, but I really appreciate the experienced feedback as well

Also, I love your screen name, it made me laugh.

I forgot to mention Morningside, any opinions on that area? We're also looking at an apt in Morris Park tomorrow.
Morris Park should be good, but the commute might be a little bit harder. Depending on the specific section, it's a pretty long walk to Bx12 (you can take the Bx8 bus and transfer, but it doesn't run too frequently)

Here is a map of the buses in The Bronx and which ones serve Fordham.
http://mta.info/nyct/maps/busbx.pdf

The neighborhoods that would give you an easy commute would be along the Webster Avenue or Fordham Road corridors (and the ones you looked at are, so good job with the research. )

If you look at the map, you'll see that Kingsbridge and Marble Hill are along the Bx9 route, which serves Fordham, so those are possibilities as well.

That's Norwood, which is reasonably safe, but Bedford Park is probably better.

Try Van Cortlandt Village. Safe, diverse, a favorite among many newcomers to the city, and about fifteen minutes away on bus from Fordham.

You are overly concerned about safety. Since you are used to walking around Philly, you should have no problem in any parts of New York. I've lived in both cities and can attest to that.

Hey Alice if you are interested in living in a two bedroom apt. in Van Cortland Village PM me. I have a place with parking for one car ( no garage ). I am moving but I don;t know if it will work with your timeline. Very close to transportation, subway, jogging/walking around the reservoir and safe. Good luck.

Default outside the box option

If you want to maximize safety try somewhere in Westchester along the metro north harlem line. The train stops right at Fordham U and it transits areas without the quality of life issues of the Bronx, it may make the transition from the decivilized west coast more gentle.

The metro north is not a cost effective option. Parts of Westchester is worse than the Bronx, like Yonkers and Peekskill. The Bronx has good niches, you just gotta know where to look.
