I'm trying to pack and decide what to move to NYC. I will be renting an apartment in Manhattan (at least that's the plan). How likely is it that I will have carpet and need the vacuum? Most listing I see is for hardwood...
I think it's always necessary to have a vacuum, even with hardwood floors. Depending upon the style, though, it might not be as easy to store if it's not an upright or a small vacuum, especially if you have limited closet space.

I had 5 vacuums, different styles for different tasks and when I moved and I tossed out 2 of them...still wondering if I made the right choice.
Even with hardwood you need at least a suction device like a cannister with a tool for corners, but perhaps not an upright with a beater brush that is de rigeur for carpeting.
it just seems stupid to move things that i won't use that i can try to sell now... but it seems stupid to sell something only to replace. It's all in my "purge everything i won't need because i'll be living in a shoebox" effort.
Well, I wasn't bringing a rug. But you're probably right that I will end up with one. So, it seems like it's still a good idea to keep the vacuum.
I'm going to have to figure out how to fit everything in!
