Hey. I'm moving to NYC for work in SoHo. My budget is going to be pretty tight; I'll be making $35k (before taxes), but I've saved up $10k and I'm expecting $5k from selling my car. I want to make my savings last as long as possible, so I'd like to pay around $850 for an apartment with roommates, but I'm a little flexible. I realize that's not going to be in Manhattan.
My top priorities are safety and nearness to SoHo. A lot of 20-somethings and some decent food/entertainment nearby would be a plus.
I'd also appreciate any advice on whether I'm being realistic with my monthly expenses.
Plan is to use savings on <$2500 for rent for the year, $700 on furniture, and $1200 for cushion money. Hopefully I won't have to touch the rest, but I'm willing to dip into it if necessary.
Since you're willing to live with roommates, you've got more options than those who have also have a low budget but insist on living alone. You should check out Ft. Greene and Cobble Hill in Brookyln. North Park Slope may also be an option. All of these neighborhoods are close to Atlantic Terminal, which has a huge selection of subway trains to choose from, including the R which will take you right into Soho. Lots of 20 somethings around those areas though they are starting to approach the "young family" phase of gentrification.
It will get cheaper the further out in Brooklyn you are willing to go--and there will be fewer strollers.
LOL fewer strollers, funny but true. I would just scratch out Park Slope all together and just go for the surrounding neighborhoods like Prospect Heights which now also are starting to have your cool bars and restaurants for you 20 year olds.
I don't think you can pull it off...certainly not anywhere near SOHO.
I'm confused by your planning to USE savings to live but the also planning to SAVE $400/month.
