Fuhgeddabout Manhattan! The 2 and 3 trains both run through downtown Brooklyn. And most areas served by these lines (they don't split apart until Franklin Avenue) will be a lot less expensive than Manhattan. By the way, since you specifically mentioned Prospect Heights--no, it isn't a "dangerous" area.

Bay ridge and sunset park are the two places I'm trying to crack into sunset park is my number 1 choice because of proximity to my job and the city...

I ended up finding a newly renovated studio in Bay Ridge on the top floor of a building off 93rd and 4th avenue. I am paying 1K, and i really like the area. I am half middle eastern and there are a bunch of places to get good middle eastern, greek, and italian food. I feel safe walking around at night and am right across from a 24 hour fitness gym. So i am happy about settling in and would recommend this area if you work in downtown brooklyn or lower manhattan and dont want to pay the money or cant afford it. I will probably move closer to town if i get promoted.
