Since you presumably don't have a college degree and haven't mentioned any special skills, my personal opinion is that you shouldn't move to NYC until you have one or the other, along with several thousand dollars in savings.
Yeah you'd be crazy to come to NYC and try to compete for jobs without a college degree. You say that your rent budget would be $700-$1300, well to afford that your yearly salary would need to be $40,000 - $60,000. Everyone competing for those jobs will have a college degree, internships and work experience. Below that salary range, you won't be able to comfortably afford your rent and it will likely be a dead end job. Also, you won't be able to save anything and since there is high turnover in every industry and job in NYC, you won't have a safety net to fall back on if you need to look for another job.
You need at least a bachelors degree and $10,000 saved up before you even consider moving to NYC.
The plan is to find a job before I get a place...like I said, I have people who I could stay with in the meantime.
