I am looking to move to NYC. I am a white 19 year old kid from the Detroit area. I don't really care what borough, how dirty/clean the area is, being a minority or any of that stuff. I just want to be in an affordable place where I won't get ****ed with too much. I would be living with room mates and I am willing to work almost any job (think I'm going into teaching, though).
I've heard good things about Astoria, Riverdale, Morningside, and LIC as far as safety/affordability; but honestly, I have been exposed to a lot of things here in Michigan and I am not afraid of rougher areas, and I have pretty good street smarts.
I am of Lebanese decent, and am used to that culture, so anywhere populated with Arabic people is a plus (I speak some Arabic).

The only notable Arab neighborhood in NYC is Little Egypt, in Astoria (along Steinway St between 28th Ave and Astoria Blvd). It's not very big. There are scattered Arab populations elsewhere, though; I seem to recall northern Bay Ridge in Brooklyn having a somewhat notable Arab population.
But this question is very hard to answer without knowing a price range (what rent can you afford?) and what sort of neighborhood you are looking for (other than "cheap" [how cheap?] and "not really rough" [which only precludes a handful of neighborhoods]).
Also, there's no neighborhood called "Morningside". There's Morningside Heights, which is dominated by Columbia University and its student body.
Agree-- we ened to know your budget. Agree w BrownstoneNY re Astoria-- it is a nice neighborhood overall and youw ll find ARab restaurants and hookah bars on Steinway street

What is your job experience?? The job market is tight right now.
Do you have someone to stay with while you look for a job and a place to live? It would be risky to come here without a place to stay -- because at your age you run the risk of someone exploiting you. A smart 19 year old guy will have job options here but you will have to actively look for work and be flexible.
Not to slam Detroit--but almost anywhere outside of Michigan will be a better environment to find a job.
Well my budget would be somewhere between $700-$1300 preferably. I am from the Detroit area, so I am used to some crime. And yes, I have a few places I could stay in the meantime while looking for work. I mean, honestly, I would be willing to do any legit job that will pay the rent.
Like I said, I'm not picky. I just want a cool neighborhood in NYC. No borough specific, I would actually prefer not to be in Manhattan, unless it was Harlem or Morningside Heights. I hate tourists and hipsters.
You could try some places in Southern Brooklyn [like Bensonhurst or Gravesend]. You should be able to find something in your price range.
