As suppose to driving, what makes the public transportation systems of New York so desirable for use? Between the rails, buses, and subways, why do you use public transit instead of driving. Obviously because of parking issues and ny is a huge city but those cant be the only reasons. Why do you use the MTA and NJT systems instead of vehicles?
Most people take public transport, because they either cannot afford to drive and/or park. Some, because they have little reason to leave early or stay late enough to beat the traffic, or they are ignorant as to the fact that you can do so, beat the traffic.
Earn enough to pay for parking, or have parking as a job perk, and you start work 8:30 or before and quit 7:00 or later, and driving is a breeze. Little hassle, unless there is an accident, or the President comes to town.
Most people work 9 to 5, stuck in the meat of the rush hour and the consequences thereof. A half hour difference in start time makes a huge difference in the quality of one's commute, whether driving or taking public transport.
NJ Transit bus commuting is a quite pleasant experience. Buses are on time, air conditioned, and normally you get a seat, both ways.
All other forms of public transport from the boroughs and the greater tri-state SUCK!
Also, many are new to the tri-state area and have little knowledge and/or experience in keeping a car, and getting around the area efficiently.

That's ridiculous.I know countless NY'ers, including myself, who could easily afford a car and all of the attendant costs ,including garaging,if they chose. Most do not.
Deciding that car ownership is not worth it is not the same as not being able to afford it.There are better things to do with time and money than keep a car when it's unnecessary.
Why would anyone want the bother and expense of a car if you didn't need one? That's apart from the ecological aspect.
