I don't know how a place ranked among the top 5 places for gays is " backwards" and " non progressive".

Magazine ranks Atlanta as America's gayest city *| ajc.com

I guess people live by their stereotypes though.

Are you seriously looking to make this a thread about politics? You fulfill the stereotype very well.

The OP asked for New Yorker views of the South. I gave mine, just deal with it.

You, the enlightened and open minded New Yorker brought politics into this while ignoring the gay rankings. Do I need to post the link?

Curious where you got this view from?...

Its ironic that some the ignorance you decry is exactly what your are exhibiting in your post.

Then you have some guy claiming Houston isn't a southern city, WTF?
Atlanta is a nice city and is not representative of the South as a whole. Its completely different than any place in the South.

Again, Texas and Oklahoma are geographically in the south, but they are not "Southern." By "Southern" I am referring to Arkansas, Louisiana, Missisippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Florida (minus the southern part which "feels" Northern), South and North Carolina, and Virginia (minus the DC-metro area). By that definition, Houston is not southern. Not to mention that is a very moderate city politically.

I don't believe that a place is only "southern" based on outdated stereotypes. The geography is the only objective measure and on both fronts Houstonites would disagree with you that Houston is not "southern".

Atlanta is like many large cities in the south, often deemed "new south". It is it's own city but all large/major cities in the south are pretty moderate and open minded.

So the goal of the thread is to make bible thumping, bigoted, racist morons feel GOOD about themselves? Sorry.

The original poster asked what New Yorkers thought of the South...he got his answer and all the screeching about how delightful Alabama is can be saved for Chamber of Commerce ads.

After having lived there for a while, I would say my opinion is not a very high one. There are some good things, like....cheaper stuff, but aside from that.....I'm sorry I'm drawing a blank here. Um, warmer I guess? OH, good Barbecue! Thats it!
