I don't understand people who give WRONG information.
NO, it won't be weak. It will be 100 mph.
It won't likely hit NY at 100 mph, however, keep in mind that wind speeds are higher at higher elevation. Meaning with all the skyscrapers in NYC, winds above about the 25th floor will be significantly stronger than at ground level. Expect a lot of blown out windows and shattered glass falling to the streets.
It just started raining in central NC from Irene, and the skies are very dark. When it began to rain, the dogs started barking, it's been so long since it's rained. We're getting power fluctuations, too, which is pretty strange.
For us, it's predicted tomorrow we'll have 20 to 30 mph with gusts 40 to 50 mph and some outages. No big deal.
It'll be much worse for you as it crawls up the coast.
The Duane Reade near my apartment still has water but is sold out of condoms. Figure that out.
That's interesting. Based on the experience from the Caribbeans and Floridians hurricane time can be scary yet exciting. Despite the hassle to get prepared you get days off from work or school. Neighbors all come out and share food - when the power is out food in the fridges have to go.
On my way home today, I was surprised to see construction crews tearing up the street and leaving the debris on the side of the road. When I asked one of the workers what they planned to do with the debris, he said they were going to leave it sitting there over the weekend.
WHAT?
I couldn't believe it, doesn't the city know that that debris most likely will be picked up by the wind? And then I got to thinking, there are about 6 unchained trashcans on my street full of garbage, police barricades at the end of my street sitting on the sidewalk and tons of plywood next to City College. And, my building is renovating an apartment and the crew left the garbage in the dumpster uncovered (until I pointed it out to my super and now there is a tarp laying over it). It is full of wood, nails, sinks etc and people have thrown their garbage in their too. Do they not know that the winds + debris = mess. When we lived in Florida a street crew would come and clear the streets before a hurricane, and there was still debris from trees everywhere.
And on the street I work on, workers left a lot of construction material sitting on top of scaffolding. I mean come on, really? I'm not that worried about the storm itself though, been through plenty hurricanes in Florida, I just pray that the power does not go out.
I can't wait to see my street on Monday morning...
By tomorrow morning this will be downgraded to a tropical storm
and all of the hype and paranoia will subside....until the next
"hurricane threat."
