I don't like Bowery on the J line. Its not unsafe per se but the potential is there.


Jamaica-Van Wyck on the E is another weird one, at night at least.
Broadway Junction feels like a bodega.

I think this is a crazy question with no single right answer. Well, don't go anywhere at night just to get off and walk around. Duh!.

In Manhattan, there is only a handful of above ground stations as far as I know, and all are on the 1, starting around 116th St/Columbia Univ uptown to 225th St. So why chance it? If someone wants to roam around, I would suggest doing it on the bus M-F, from 10 am - 3 pm. Don't pull out a map as that's a sure sign you don't know where you are going. Pick an end point, then make a mental note of where you want to get off, if you do.

Or take a "Get On - Get Off" bus.

Doing an on/off subway journey in Manhattan makes zero sense to me.
