I'm going to Newark airport for the first time in a while, and I checked wth the shuttle bus company on how long the ride is from Grand Central. To my amazement, the guy - a supervisor - said, ideally 50 minutes. Now, I remember when I used to fly more regularly that one advantage to Newark was that it was suprisingly close. I thought that "ideally" it was closer to 25 minutes. Am I wrong?
I regularly take this bus, and yep, it's about 50 minutes. You have to keep in mind after the bus leaves GCT, it stops at 42nd & 5th, and then again at port Authority (where it usually spends about 10 minutes).
Newark is geographically close, but only if you're driving yourself and there's no traffic.
NJT from Penn Station can take you to the airport (Northeast Corridor trains marked "EWR"), but PATH only takes you to Newark Penn Station; you'd have to change for the airport.
NJT North Jersey Coast Line from Penn Station --> Air Train monorail thingy. You're there. It only takes about 30 minutes if you don't have to wait for a monorail. The NJT express train goes there too I think, it'd be a little faster but I don't know if it's worth it. I've only ever done it twice but it went pretty smoothly when I did.
No problem! For me, it's worth the slightly longer travel time, because I don't have to drag my bags around train stations. I work across from GCT, so I just spring for the cab to work (I usually leave straight from there), and walk the block to the bus stop. Much less hassle.
