Hey guys, I'm a college aged student and am looking for my first place to rent. What are some of the cheaper areas? I'd be looking for a one bedroom apartment or a studio perhaps. I wouldn't mind living in a suburb outside the city if its cheaper as long as its fairly close and easy enough to get to the city. Would definitely be looking for something under $1,000 though

You can find plenty of studios in the outer boroughs for under 1k. That's about it though.

If you want to live by yourself (no roommate) then look at Queens or Brooklyn. You can also consider Hoboken or other parts of NJ as well.

Under 1000 will put you in the ghetto without a roommate. With a roommate, you can afford some good neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn in a 2 bedroom.

Also, too many people refer to Manhattan as "the city" and the boroughs as "not the city." They are just as much "the city" as Manhattan is. All parts of New York City are New York City. There are more people in Brooklyn than in Manhattan. There are also more people in Queens than in Manhattan.

My advice:

Find a room in a larger apartment in Queens. Astoria, Long Island City, and Sunnyside are all within 15 minutes of Manhattan.

For less than $1,000, it would be a minor miracle to find anything below about 150th St. in Manhattan.

That would not be a minor miracle, that would be the equivalent of water into wine as far as I'm concerned.

Dyker/Bensonhurst/Gravesend/Sheepshead Bay.
That whole region of southern Brooklyn is pretty safe and there are many studios under 1K here.

If your school is on the West Side, consider NJ and stay near the PATH train.

I was gonna post the same thing. Bensonhurst is very safe, and not expensive to boot.

You could also try Glendale, Eastern Ridgewood, and Maspeth, although Maspeth is pretty far from a train line.

You may also be able to afford a studio in Flushing or other Queens neighborhoods. I'd go for Queens if your college is in Midtown and Brooklyn if your college is in Downtown.
