The days of mind altering drugs were over so definitely not LSD, Cocaine gathered more to an affluent disco crowd, and too early for Crack Cocaine. I guess these were no love sick teeny boppers on weed so my guess is Heroin.

i'm always inquiring about 8th Avenue in this area, but in 1977 a guy leaning against the then Palace Theater(now I think it's the Doubletree Suites) tried to trick my friend into asking him for directions, then when he got his attention threatened him with a knife (we ran). this happened on 7th Avenue and 47th street

back in the day was it common for this to have happened on that particular corner? less common or uncommon?

I remember as a kid passing thru Knickberbocker and Troutman in the 80's and it looking like something straight out of a movie scene. Crackheads just everywhere. You would see them sitting on the floor smoking crack in plain site.
