hi there, i am relocating to NYC and would prefer to live in a one bedroom apartment in downtown area (Chelsea, West Village, Greenwich, Battery Park too).
can anyone recommend really good helpful brokers? thanks kindly.
See if your employeer can recommend any brokers and a company to go with. Also, there are brokers that work downtown that charge one month to 12%.
It will be diffucult to find a no-fee broker, unless you get lucky with a landlord paying the fee or you have the budget for a luxury building that is paying the fee. If you want to avoid paying a fee all together, you would have to do the legwork yourself.

PM me if you're still looking for a broker, and are willing to pay for one. I just relocated and I liked my broker. But there isn't really a no-fee broker. How do you think they make money...?
From what I understand sometimes when broker advertise no fee, that's simply because they were taking the incentive the landlord was offering. For example, landlord offer a free month, instead of you receiving that, the broker takes that.
The other option is to look for management companies that rent apartments directly to consumers. Apartmentratings.com may be a good resource. Call the properties directly and you will save the broker fee. Unfortunately, most of the listed apartments are not cheap, so depending on your budget it may not help you tham much. Also some owners rent directly through Craigslist, but I wouldn't rely on it too much.
In NYC, first, renters do not usually retain brokers - the landlords do that. Second, unless you're looking for something ritzy, you probably don't need one. You'll do fine with the internet - Craigslist, the New York Times site, Renthop, whatever.
