i say socialism as if it is a bad word because to me it is a bad word. socialism just creates poverty for everyone and brutal government. i realize that our government is too large and involved in too many things. thats why i want it slashed in size. elimination of the departments of energy, education, EPA and many others is what i want.
What Bloomberg and the NYPD are doing now is flat out stupid.
Their line of reasoning for doing this is that they have to show who's in control and not let this get "out of hand". Of course they won't admit this. However, this line of action has never worked unless they're willing to arrest and incarcerate protesters for prolonged periods of time or flat out kill people.
These protesters will come back hungrier and with more resolve. It's an inevitability.
In instances such as this, it's better to err on the side of "too much" freedom for the protesters than too little.
Of course it also doesn't help that many NYPD are far from professional and prone to violence as taught to them in the academy.
Bloomberg can keep this up and there will be riots.

You're confusing communism with socialism. Two different things. Communism is a political system while socialism is an economic system.
There is room for socialism even in a Capitalist economy. In fact, a Capitalist economy could not operate efficiently and without threat unless there's a it of socialism. Unless you want to live in a society with constant social upheaval then (the right amount of) socialism is a small price to pay for security and prosperity.
I agree that in certain areas we've become too Socialist but dismissing socialism in a Capitalist economy is irrational.
I'm as capitalist as they get but there's no free lunch in this world and this applies to a well functioning and peaceful capitalist system.
My belief is that OWS will melt away after the first snowfall and they will go back to their trendy hipster cafes in Williamsburg and rant as they sip their lattes and tweet on their iPhones.
Seriously, this isent going to turn into a civil war or anything. It's just a bunch of lazy self centered twenty somethings being egged on by the usual far left types. It never amounts to anything, why would this be different?

Feels good to be on a high horse eh? I was there again tonight and all ages, races, genders, and creeds were represented.

A great turnout tonight tens of thousands without a doubt. Met up at 74th st/Roosevelt Ave with about 60 other people who were as diverse as the borough itself, occupied the R train and shared our sentiments and stories on the people's mic (don't worry all you internet transit marshalls, there was plenty of room for everybody and no one was late for lunch I promise).
CUNY students were out on strike today and they met us at Foley Square. After an hour or so of music and speeches the masses peacefully marched across the bridge without obstructing any traffic. In fact, there was nonstop honking from passing traffic in support of the movement. Someone projected a big '99%' and 'Another world is possible' onto the Verizon building - whose workers still haven't won back the cuts they're up against, and who were among us in solidarity yet again.
Of course the NYPD went OD on police presence as usual. Its funny to me because if there was not one cop on the scene there would be even less a chance of violence breaking out.
A lady in the crowd started a chant: 'You're sexy / You're cute / Take off your riot suit' which everybody had a great time with. I saw one cop doing a little dance when he heard it.
Sorry to the masochists who blindly believe what TV feeds them, but this isn't going anywhere, and it gets more beautiful every time I see it. It cuts through all the BS and unites people across all demographics. We are the 99% is not a catchphrase.
