Depending on when you want to do this, you might be able to take advantage of the bike share program that is scheduled to start up next year.

Restrooms YES on West Side...I think NOT on the East Side at least I never found one. (Though there's a park with a toilet at 96th and First...slight detour.

Eastside is all fine gravel...westside macadam, better biking.

I love, love, love my bike.

The greenway on the West Side is the best (and as one poster said, it truly is the safest way to get from north to south), but some of the quieter streets in the West Village, Soho and Tribeca are easily bike-able too. If you stay aware (of both pedestrians and cars) and obey traffic laws, you will be fine.

My boyfriend rides his up Sixth Avenue to work every day and loves it. It's exhilarating and freeing.

After not riding in the city since the 1978 Transit strike (motorists were crazy) I got another bike Spring 2010. I was shocked to find bike paths everywhere, with more being built right before my eyes!

Thanks, Mikey! You got this one right.

Thanks also to Transportation Alternatives for their advocacy. New York is now in the 21st Century.

Yep, Mike and did it right with this.

Now if ONE Avenue (I recommend FIFTH) could be closed to everything but bike and pedestrian traffic (ambulances excepted) the City would achieve Nirvana.

It is what HAS to be done in any World Class City! This endless clogging of autos is anathema!
