Ive always wondered how people afford the rent in certain areas of Manhattan. so my question is, do you think employers pay their employees depending on the address/where they live?

That is exactly how it works, you've hit the nail on the head.

Extra points if you're a native!

To the OP, no, employers don't. People either work for their money or inherit it.

Yes, I own my own business and I set my pay as follows:
  • Between Houston and 14th St gets a base salary of $70k.
  • 14th to 59th gets an additional $3k but has to pay a Midtown tax (to me).
  • 59th to 110th gets an additional $12k a year and use of the company slave.
  • Anyone below Houston must learn to speak our language and change their money before coming to work.
  • Anyone above 110th makes minimum wage and must work only during non-business hours.
  • If you live in the Bronx, Queens, or Staten Island, I assume you'll quit in a week anyway.
  • If you live in Brooklyn, I make you pay ME $40k a year.
  • If you live in NJ, I pay you in cart food.

Short answer: no. That's absurd.

as someone already pointed out, most ppl that live in manhattan in their own apartments are either making bank or have inherited wealth. however, i think most residents here do in fact have roommates, something you might not have considered.

living with a roommate in the city can work out to abt the same as getting your own (perhaps even much bigger) place in one of the outer boroughs. it's a choice ppl make.

Why would a single person need a 2 bedroom apartment?

Well, you did leave out a few categories:

-rent-stabilized apartment, long-term tenant
-rent-controlled apartment
-low income housing
-coop or condo that was purchased well before run-up in prices

But what you said wasn't exactly wrong like the other person said; it was just incomplete.
