I'm strongly considering moving to NYC within the next year or so. I own a car and understand that it costs around $200/month to park in the burroughs, and upwards of $450 to park in downtown. I'd like to keep my car but I don't think I'll even be able to afford the lesser of those two costs.
My work will send me out of the state periodically to various cities, and I'd like to be able to utilize my car to make those trips. Also I'd like to have it in case I want to visit friends or family in other states.
Does anyone know if there's any chance I could find a place to park my car way out of the city that might cost less than $200/month? I'm thinking I might be able to park my car somewhere out of town that I could get to by taking the subway to a bus station and the bus to the lot or garage.
I'd probably only need the car once or twice ever few months, but I don't want to give it up.
Is that possible? If so, where would this magical parking lot be?
If not, how costly/inconvenient/possible is it to get a sticker and park on the street out in the burroughs?
You should be able to rent a parking space in someone's driveway for $100 somewhere in the outer boroughs, probably not in a convenient spot for subway access, but possibly for bus access. Have you checked craigslist under parking and storage?
You don't need a sticker to park on the street in NYC, but you do need to move it for street cleaning. There are areas where there is no street cleaning, but I wouldn't feel comfortable just leaving my car out on the street for weeks on end. Something could happen to it.
Well, when I say "work", what I really mean is driving out of town for auditions. As an actor I'm sadly my own business. So there is no company car or rental coverage.
It did not occur to me to look for that sort of thing on craigslist. Thank you very much for the suggestion.
