My landlord informed me that they had a two bedroom that I could potentially rent in Sunset Park (50th St. btwn 2nd & 3rd Ave.) I have been waiting for a larger apt. to come available for some time; as we are in a small 1 bdrm. off of 5th in S. Park Slope. I have a 10 year old son, so am hoping to get some insight, opinions on this particular area. Thoughts?

I believe there's a library up the block or very close by. Area is OK but 2nd and 3rd avenue is past a highway underpass. So it's kind of dark crossing that street at night time. 5-8 years ago I would warn against it, but that neighborhood got a lot better since then. You should visit the area yourself to see. I use to be on 55th and 4th and it's a fine now.

Thanks for the info. I have scouring threads trying to get some more insight. My main concern is that my son is happy/ safe. I am going to look at it on Friday...

The block between 2nd and 3rd is just down the street from Bush Terminal. Hardcore industrial district. Definitely take that into account! If a location like that doesn't bother you, the local transportation isn't too bad: you can catch the B11 bus on 52 Street, and the R train stops at 53 Street/4 Avenue.

I work on 44th and 2nd Ave for the last 20 years, I am very familiar with the neighborhood.

But i would not want to live on 50 between 2 & 3. It isn't bad like you would get killed, but it is not a nice neighborhood, not by any standard.

On 3rd Ave, from about 48th to 57th, you will see prostitutes on a fairly regular basis. If that doesn't bother you, then go for it. On either 48 or 50 there's a pretty rowdy Mexican bar also that provides plenty of patrons pissing all over the neighborhood on their way home. Cars parked under the Gowanus (3rd Ave), get broken into routinely. Robberies are not uncommon, although they have been going down.

Let's just say I have VERY intimate inside knowledge of this area due to what my employment involves for that neighborhood for the past 10 years.

I used to work walking distance. I suggest looking elsewhere

I live about 7 blocks and it's not the worst of places but walking down 3rd avenue can get a bit creepy. That block in particular does have houses if I recall correctly so maybe if you check it out you'll like it. I just find most of the places near 3rd avenue kinda depressing because of how desolate it is at night.

I worked at Airborne Express 51st & 1st in the mid 90's to early 2000's. Lot of hookers, the strip bar up the block is a bit out of control at times. It's not the cleanest area either. I guess most of the residents are renting & don't care about how there home looks. I wouldn't want to hang around that area in the middle of the night.

It's not the worst area in the world, but certainly far from the best & I wouldn't want to raise a kid there.
