I am relocating to Maryland in 2013. I've done the best that I can do here. NYC is not designed for a person with a single income. It's just too hard to have a decent quality of life.
I am looking forward to exploring different places. I may try Chicago or Detroit next. I am slightly infatuated with Arizona but the heat would kill me.
Congratulations to everyone that made their dreams come true. Good luck to the rest of you.
I'd move to Montana. Have a few horses and enjoy being away from the hustle.
Another place I might go would be Detroit--yes Detroit. The real estate is extremely inexpensive and there are good neighborhoods in that city. It's slowly clawing its way back out of decades of decline and has a lot of the gritty character NYC no longer has. I would certainly keep a loaded gun handy, but luckily the gun ownership laws in Michigan are a lot more lax. ha!
California is nice but too much traffic and expensive. Chicago is the same as NY which is very cold. If you like warm weather, Florida or Texas is a good choice. Housing is pretty much inexpensive and you get more for your money. However, jobs might be difficult to find. Houston, Tx is pretty good I heard and jobs are plenty.
I want access to public transportation and walkability. No other city that I have visited has these things. The closest (if you want to say close) are Chicago, Philly and DC. Philly has walkability and is close to New York but does not have an extensive subway system. Chicago is a great city and has great transportation, but is segregated, with questionable politics. DC has the great government job market and the Metro, but doesn't have any residential areas along its suburban stops (at least on the Green Line). One would have to live in the city limits to have walkability!
A "fantasy" city would be San Francisco. Most neighborhoods are like Park Slope with hills, but that cost of living is just like New York!
