is it the D and F that I would take? Katz's is at E Houston St and Ludlow St

take either the D or F to the Second Avenue station and is it 12 blocks east on Houston to Katz's? if it's 12 blocks how long a walk is it?

The best way would be determined better if we knew where you were coming from. But getting off at 2nd Avenue (F train) is really easy and it is not a long walk. It's not 12 blocks away. It's like a 5 minute walk from there.

Default i know where to get the D or the F

I live in Riverdale but i don't know where i'll be before i go to Katz's. i know i can get both the D and F between Rockefeller Ctr and W 4th street

i know they changed some lines but it's still the F and D that will go to Second Avenue?

If you exit at the front of the F train (heading toward Brooklyn), you will be at 1st Ave and it's only a couple of short blocks to Katz's.

If you're going by subway, take the F train to 2nd Avenue as several people have already noted. From the East Side, though, you could also take the M15 bus, which will drop you off on the corner of Houston/1st Avenue. The M14 bus, on 14th Street, does even better: it's got a run that goes along Avenue A. You can take that bus--or the M9, which does the same thing--to the corner of Houston and Essex, one block east of Ludlow (which is where Katz's is).

And just for the record, if you take the J train to Essex Street, you'll be three blocks below Houston, which is pretty convenient to Katz's, as well.

also not far from the essex street J and M stations - probably same distance as the F train at 2nd ave

Not sure why you would even want to go there. What is so special about a pastrami sandwich 2 feet high? And oh yeah, no sharing! Bite me!
