Is it safe at all hours to ride the 1 to the 231st Street stop and make a transfer to a bus there? If not, how late could one do this and remain reasonably safe. I appreciate your replies.
During the day, it is one of the most busiest so you should have no fear. Some of the areas around it (Riverdale and Van Cortlandt Village) are middle-upper class neighborhoods, so no need to worry about getting mugged at any time of day around them. The 1 station is one of the cleanest stations, but I'm not sure how late is too late.
After 11 or midnight the buses reduce their frequency of operation so you may wait longer. Also most crimes on the 1 train are committed in the empty cars, mainly toward sleeping passengers or someone whom they feel are a good target
Crime is a possibility there at that hour, however it is FAR less than in other Bronx areas. I don't think anyone ever gets killed or seriously injured from being a crime victim around the broadway 231st street area--worst may be being threatened with a weapon or being roughed up a bit or pick pocketed or conned.
there is a 24 hour Walgreens on the corner where you can go to wait and the police station is 5 blocks from there
That's the best area of the bronx to have to wait for a bus or train--you could do much much much worse elsewhere
I think Woodlawn's station on the 4 is really safe. Morris Park's stop on the 5 is also really safe.
