Didn't know places like this existed till I read it on here, I wikipedia'ed the place and it sounds pretty cool.

So I wanna ask you people what is Co-Op city like?
There is a min. amount you have to make to live there, so theres probably no to little poverty and the racial makeup of the community is very diverse.
55% Black 25% Hispanic 20% White

Sounds really nice.

Let me know what you think.

This may sound harsh and it's not meant to offend anyone that lives in these units. However, Coop City is like a high-end housing project (in my opinion). Too congested and overpopulated. Parking is horrible and access to the train is limited. Not a very nice community in my opinion.

My father lives there and he's in the process of moving to North Carolina. He hates it there.

Co-op city is 20% white? I would have guessed that the percentage of white people there is closer to 5-10%.

Hopefully they'll end up getting a Metro North Station in co-op city, then the commute to Manhattan won't be nearly so bad.

Aren't most of the Whites in Co-op City old Jews who will die off in a few years, anyway? I mean, I remember someone brought up Albanians, Ukranians, and Russians living in the neighborhood but I rarely see them. Then again, I'm hardly ever down in that section of the Bronx.

Co-op is a mostly black neighborhood. It's an okay area. I would classify it as a modest step up from most ghettos. The people there are really not that much different from people you would find in a typical ghetto.

Personally I don't like co-op city. It feels very secluded. They could really really use a metro-north station.

Here's a site with plenty of bad reviews from people who have lived there:

Co-op city has little poverty in Bronx terms but a lot of people are still struggling to pay the bills. As for demographics, it's mostly Black and Latino. A few Whites, but they are seniors.

I don't like the area. It has it's problems with gangs and drugs. Someone was shot dead on the Einstein Loop a few days back. Maintance isn't the greatest either. Parking, good luck. Mass transit, a LONG ride. Much better places to live.

I guess the buildings themselves look good enough, and there are lots of different shops and restaurants in the surrounding areas, but the place just weirds me out. Its what I imagine a Soviet housing bloc would look like, but its in America. The place has no character, its just a bunch of huge square buildings.

Yeah overall Co-Op city is a step up from the ghetto, although it is affordable housign as well. In my personal opinion, it looks like the typical housing projects, only these have balconies and garages as well. The area does have significant shopping, but transportation to the city is awkward and can be loooong.

Overall it is a development that serves the purpose of true affordable housing for mixed income (middle and lower class).
