I'm sure people will carry their garbage with them and not just throw it on the tracks.

I'm someone who gets paid to make sure that trash cans are placed in the right place to collect as much trash as possible.

There are certain types of people who don't think about trash cans and just drop their crap anywhere they want, even right next to a perfectly good trash can.

Sometimes they're grouped by country of origin or heritage. Sometimes it's a bunch of knuckle-dragging heavy metallers. It's usually men and not women. Men are used to having mommy pick up after them and women are more conscientious because a lot of them already have that job.

I don't think that there's anything that the MTA can do to make their stations cleaner short of hiring more maintenance staff.

I just don't buy it, but the MTA says that to get rid of garbage and the vermin they bring, and to cut costs, they'll can the cans in some subway stations. The experiment is supposed to start at the 8th st R stop in the Village and the Main St stop in Flushing on the 7.

You just don't understand NYC logic. No trash cans=people throw trash on ground thus implies tickets given out for littering thus NYC gets revenue. If its anything like the stories of the Dept of Sanitation having undercover police to watch trash cans for improper trash then its going to be $100 a pop.

I have heard of people getting tickets for having their bag or their feet on the subway seats. I would much prefer that the people who litter get tickets rather than someone who has a (clean) bag on the seat next to them.

What is wrong with people that they think it is ok to throw their trash on the ground? They SHOULD carry their trash with them if they can't find a trash can. Probably what most people are throwing away is food trash anway, and food doesn't belong in the subways. If it's a newspaper they need to throw away, then they should put it in their bag or briefcase until they get to a place where they can throw it or recycle it (like their office or their home).

Throwing trash on the ground is classless behavior.

I see people throwing their trash out of the subway cars onto the platform, so yeah, they do not care whether there is a can or not.

The next step would be a train with NO SEATS to have the maximum amount of people on a train.

Here's the funny thing (well, OK, as a transit worker, I don't really mean it's funny)...

When someone's garbage thrown on the tracks causes a track fire--which translates into a delay--you'll hear people almost automatically complain. Of course, if nobody threw their trash around like that, these things wouldn't happen. But you can't point that out to anyone unless you're in the mood for an argument.
