Bronx Brewing Company and Jonas Broncks Beer are both opening breweries in our borough in the next year. And they will be opening them in the Southern Bronx....Mott Haven. Both created by locals...that's wassup!

What's the deal with this whole the "Southern" Bronx thing?

There is no deal...South Bronx is dated and no longer applies. Communities are now described by actual neighborhood names, like Mott Haven or Melrose, and by geography, instead of the blanket "South Bronx" moniker.

Geography is now front and center, so there is a Southern Bronx, Central Bronx, West Bronx, Northern Bronx, etc. Makes sense. Can't wait for the breweries.

How someone could believe that is pretentious is strange. Had I used the term "Sobro", I would agree and understand. But Southern Bronx? Central Bronx? Northern Bronx? Really? Your really stretching here...and by stretching I mean being silly.

You purposefully not using the term that any true new yorker has and still refers to that part of the bronx sounds pretentious. As does "SoBro". Which is your name. And which I laugh at every time I see.

I'm excited about ANY brewery, no matter where it is. I'm a fanatical homebrewer who may eventually open a brewpub somewhere (outside of the city though, lol) when I retire and I plan all of my vacations around breweries. I'm drinking a $9 22oz bottle of Sierra Nevada Harvest Ale as we speak. Cheers!

Airborneguy...I am not clear when exactly they are opening but I will be meeting with the owner of the Jonas Broncks brand to discuss his location, retail component, etc. Last I heard it will be opening along Bruckner Blvd in Mott Haven (waterfront) and I think they are trying to negotiate water taxi service to it as well. Life is good!

As someone who holds a second job at a brewery in my state, I think this is a nice addition to the boro. There's a growing interest in this country in craft beers, so kudos to the people looking to initiate this. Hopefully this will entice people to visit the boro and that neighborhood. And maybe this can be a way to create a few new jobs as well. Manufacturing isn't coming back, and we can't just rely on fast food chains to supply basic, service economy jobs, so maybe this will be an option where the neighborhood and the companies benefit from this.
