My son lives in Ridgewood. His car has been stolen twice and broken into countless times. He is looking for an apartment away from there.

I'm sorry to hear that about your son. He should move ASAP. Queens has some wonderful sections, and some are service by the subway. If he can afford it, move out that area. Northwest Queens ( like LIC, Astoria, ect) offer some great areas and are only a few stops from Manhattan.

We are very familiar with Queens, my wife was born and grew up there and we lived in Flushing for 24 years before moving to The Island. We are trying to talk our son into moving in with us until he finds a new apartment.

Wowwwww. the responses here are amazing. I live in Ridgewood. Now im not gonna pretend and say its a calm and safe neighborhood all the time cause i'd be lying but at the same time it's not as bad as the people in this thread are putting it up to be. Three main problems in the area is 1) graffitti (which the community is working on 2) gang problems (with the various different groups of cultures mixed into this area, there's alot of bad blood between them) and 3) damage to property such as cars, homes, etc,. (I honestly don't kno why people enjoy doing it so much but what can u do). Now I might not sound like Im helping the cause but this is not something that is an everyday thing. Honestly, its like every other working-to middle class neighborhood. If you dont go looking for trouble, trouble more than likely will not find you. And compared to the neighboring areas even shockingly Bushwick, it is cheaper to rent an apartment. Overall, it's a pretty decent area for the price, and if anything to be on the safe side, look for apartments below the Woodward Ave. border.

Are you sure you didn't mean above the Woodward Ave. border? Below is where the trouble starts. The area around Knickerbocker is not very nice. It's not nearly as bas as it was in the late 80's or early 90's, but it's still not what I would call a safe neighborhood. I was just there last month, there's still good shopping along Knickerbocker during the day, but I wouldn't walk around there at night.

I grew up in Ridgewood, and it was always one of those middle of the road neighborhoods...not the worst and not the best. I had my car stolen there twenty years ago. There were a lot of chop-shops in the area surrounding Ridgewood, so lot's of cars were stolen. Now they strip parts off your car overnight if they can't steal it. My mother's boyfriend had his headlights and grill stolen overnight in upper Glendale last year while parked right on Myrtle Ave.

Just to clarify, Stockholm and Knickerbocker Ave isn't Ridgewood, it's Bushwick. The 83 precinct covers the area over there. The 104 precinct covers Ridgewood, Glendale, Middle Village. I think clever marketing by real estate agents try to make the area attractive by saying it part of South Ridgewood.

Knickerbocker Avenue isn't Ridgewood, not even close. It's runs through the heart of Bushwick.

Ridgewoods borders-
Metropolitan Avenue-North
Traffic Avenue-East
Cooper Avenue-South
Cypress Avenue-West

Don't know why people here think it's a bad area. I live near Fresh Pond Road and come home at 12-1am almost everynight and I never see anything bad happen. I know it gets shady once you get near the Brooklyn border but even around there its not that bad. I moved here from Ozone Park 2 years ago and I feel much safer here.
