Weird, I actually see a bunch of white people/families walking around there. I wonder what they're doing there.
They probably live there. It's not a great neighborhood but it's not THAT bad. There are a lot creepier neighborhoods around the city.
It's right next to a division of Montefiore Medical Center and if you walk 2 blocks West you are in Woodlawn, which is something like 80% or 90% white.
I was up there recently and even saw a few Hasids ! Maybe they were landlords,I don't know.Whenever I see Hasids in neighborhoods like that I don't know what to think.

Yeah I didn't realize that Woodlawn was so close at first, I'm guessing that they were probably coming from the train station and going back to Woodlawn. Usually even in areas like that you occasionally see the old white person hear and there, but I even saw a couple of young white families with kids, so it striked me as odd.
I see a deli and a liquor store in the building, that and a subway stop (#2) within a block...not all bad .
If things turn bad, it looks like Woodlawn Cemetery is right behind the building...they could wheel you without a car.
Do they call that area EASTCHESTER?
I think if I went up that far, I'd opt for Co-Op city and a bargain on a BIG apartment.

It's Wakefield.Eastchester is way East.If you use streetview and go up and down Carpenter and the side streets between White Plains Rd and Bronx Blvd you will see some really nicely maintained houses. Some of those blocks still have some Italian and Irish mixed in too.The notorious North Bronx projects and most of the crime are to the East of White Plains Road.
A good thing is that it's either 2 blocks from the 2 and 5 at 233 st/white Plains Road or 2 blocks in the other direction from the Woodlawn Metro North which is 20 mins to Grand Central. Co op city is a transit nightmare.
There is a lot of dealing and prostitution on White Plains up there but there are some allright pockets.
You can buy a decent house around there for 300,000 if you are willing to put up with the negatives.
As I said in previous post, there are a lot of much worse neighborhoods in NYC where housing prices are much higher.
