Hi all,

I'm going to graduate with my B.A. in a month and I'm interested in obtaining a book publishing job - either in editorial, production or marketing. I have a decent amount of experience - 2 internships, editor of a magazine for a year, and my NYU publishing certificate.

I know my best shot at getting an entry level position is to move to NY, but I've spent lots of time there and it's not the place for me. So, I need suggestions of other cities with a good publishing industry where I might be able to find a job.

Being that I'm finished with school, I'm open to moving anywhere.

Thanks for your help!

If you've done the NYU course, that's probably the best place to get tips, I'd imagine. There is no city comparable to NYC for book publishing. Is Houghton Mifflin still in Boston? Maybe your best bet is to look for a job, rather than a city. Or else sit down with the LMP and look through the geographical listings.

By the way, while I admire that you're able to decide that NYC isn't right for you, it also occurs to me that if you could put up with NYC for a year or two, having a big-name NYC publisher on your resume would make you a very attractive candidate for publishers elsewhere.

Yea, its probably best that you look at some of the major publishing houses and see if they have openings in a city besides New York rather than trying to find a city in general. Some tend to have multiple offices and what not.

You can try Bookjobs.com to start(if you haven't yet). New York features heavily on that website but as Cida implied Boston seems to have a noticeable publishing industry too.
