Though NYPD Highway patrol cars are more common than you'd think. While getting a speeding ticket on a NYC highway is highly unlikely, it's possible. In the middle of the day I've seen NYPD stationed speed traps on the Belt Parkway between the Verrazano bridge and the Gowanus expressway beginning, the Clearview expressway, and on the Prospect Expressway in a grassy alcove going manhattan bound. Also, on the Shore (belt) parkway, after 2-3 am, there are quite a few hiding looking for speeders/racers.
I've seen staties in NYC maybe 1-2 times over the last 3 years or so. Very rare spottings.

I believe state troopers have large office in Long Island but that's not five boroughs.

I've seen them maybe 2-3 times a year in NYC and usually to supplement the local force during some critical events or dates (such as state of emergencies or terror alert) in places like Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge and also by Gold/Tillary St by BQE ramp. Also during the hurricane evac time, I saw plenty of state troopers and hell I even saw some college cops down by where I live in downtown brooklyn (by precint 84) to guard key locations and help evacuate folks.

I don't think I ever hav seen a NY State trooper in NYC. But then, I no longer drive and the highways are usually where they "live."

The primary reason you don't see State Troopers patrolling within the five boroughs is that they haven't got jurisdiction within the city. (That was actually simpler than you imagined, wasn't it?)

Cuomo to station state troopers on de Blasio’s turf
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is upping the ante in his battle with Mayor Bill de Blasio — by putting a state trooper barracks right in Hizzoner’s back yard, sources told The Post.

unfortunately, i have now spotted them on nyc highways giving tickets. I Have spooted them on the prospect Expressway. my friend on the belt pkwy.

I am outraged. Don't come to NYC just to ticket us.

Nys trooper has a police precinct on Randalls Island. This precinct is their jurisdiction for all of NYC. I think about 150 troopers are stationed there. That state troopers precinct on Randalls is in charge of all of NYC.

Isn't Riverbank a state park?

anyway, I'm reminded of a time I went shopping to a record store in the village -- they were known for selling "off market" CDs, let's put it. Parked right outside was a state trooper cruiser. I went in, and right there, thumbing through the live and unauthorized goodies, was a trooper with his smokey the bear hat.
Kind of surreal. The staff must have been breaking out in hives. I bet he was a Springsteen fan!
