It seems that Queens is a lot cheaper than LI....don't know why. Maybe the taxes? Anyway, we're relocating from Atlanta. My wife is Haitian, and I am white. We (household as a whole to include 15, 8, and 7 year olds) have been more involved with and around the black community than the white community, but want the best of both worlds. It seems like Queens is very segregated, at least when it comes to black and white.

Here's what we're looking for:

A mixed (in particular black and white) neighborhood.

Good HS!!!! Seems impossible to find so far.

And rent for a 4 BR under 2500 a month

Does this exist? Or am I better off to try Valley Stream etc.... Thanks for the help!!

Dont know very well of a mixed neighborhood like that. I think you are right when you say thats segregated. I hear Hollis and Rosedale have good middle class black communities. It might be worth while to check them out

I think Jackson Heights might be a more mixed neighborhood. But I don't know how much a 4 bedroom apt. costs there.

Best mixed areas in Queens, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Ridgewood, Woodhaven, parts of Richmond Hill and parts of Jackson Heights... Astoria and LIC are other options but due to gentrification and revitalization have become much more expensive in recent years... If you choose one of the first three options access to one of the very few good public high schools is available in terms of the Metropolitan High school... While the school is located on the border of glendale and Forest Hills, it is a short commute from the other two neighborhoods as well. Of the three I would say Ridgewood has the most diversity and it is the least expensive of the three but the Black population isn't that high. Doesn't really matter though because the diversity allows for everyone to coexist in peace. Rough neighborhood demographics for the area 47% Hispanic 40% White 10% Asian 3% Black... Don't recommend the junior high schools in the neighborhood though. Alot of kids who don't have a good junior high school in there neighborhoods and are a train ride area from the area come to those schools and in recent years both have taken a turn for the worse. That aside the K-5 schools are decent and the option for the Metropolitan public school is there. Best of luck.

Do some research on the high school system in the city. The quality of the local HS won't matter so much if your kids can get into an academy/magnet school.

The OP asked about black/white mixed neighborhoods in Queens.

Jackson heights, Woodside, Astoria, LIC are mixed and diverse neighborhoods but with a very small proportion of black people.

The highest proportion of blacks are in St. Albans, Hollis, Laurelton, Rosedale and Hammels in Far Rockway.

The schools in those neighborhoods are not very good, so private school should be an option if you really would like to move there and have your kids receiving a good education.

In LI you pay more in taxes, but public schools tend to be better than in Queens.

For better or worse, the best public schools in Queens are in predominantely white neighborhoods.

Agreed. If the kids have good grades, they can always apply for certain public HS's rather than going to the school they are zoned for. Since there's more than 1 child, private school may not be an option for you. Have you tried looking into Elmont? It's a mixed area with a Haitian community in some sections. If you can find an apartment in Elmont in the Franklin Square School district, your kids will most likely be zoned for Frank Carey. That particular HS is zoned in the Sewanaka School District but it's Sewanaka HS you probably don't want them to attend. It's not the better of the 2.

Only Briarwood has a sizable black and white population. The rest have blacks in the single-digit percentile.
