Might not be coming in through the windows. Could be coming in through the walls.

Keep her in the bathroom with the door sealed tight.

It seems like there are these windows from a company called CitiQuiet. They are expensive. but they may do the trick. If anyone here is using them, please let us know.

After looking those up, that's what my friend has in her apartment. They are installed inside of the existing window. As I said, they work really, really well. (And depending on where you are in JH, you will definitely need them. Some streets there are very loud.)

Um, try to get used to it, if you want to stay in New York City for a long time. For your gf, when it's time to sleep, give her ear plugs.

Ditto. I face a noisy avenue (7th Ave, mid-50's) & unfortunately, I have a lot of windows all facing the street. I tried white noise machines, the fan, the ac but the best and cheapest are ear plugs! Takes some getting used to but they're great and cheap.

Heavy drapes and thick carpeting or soundproof windows. Soundproof windows are expensive and you have to get approval from the LL.
