I know many apartments do credit checks and make sure you have a job and all of that stuff , but my plans are to just move up there and find a job and all of that , does anyone know if I saved up 6 months to a year rent if I could pay it up front and this increase my chances of getting an apartment?

Best bet would be to rent from an owner. You will probably have to give 1 to 3 months rent, but be careful as some can be shady. I wouldn't tell the owner you don't have a job though. They will ask and you will probably have to lie. Look at craigslist and you should see what you are looking for. I hope you have a real plan because you don't get good jobs in NY overnight and if you don't that rent will eat you alive and it can get real ugly for you.

My landlord gave me the option of providing him with 12 cancelled checks/ proofs of rent payments in lieu of a credit check (because I had a BK on my credit report) and he gave me my apt. No other questions asked. I think this is more likely to happen in the more modest apartments where the landlord/owner is just himself and not a big company. I have heard of landlords asking for more rent beyond the security deposit if the applicant presents as a risk in some way (like bad credit or lack of proof of past rent payments).

My apt falls under rent stabilization guidelines. Legally they cannot ask me for more than 1 months security deposit. The rental application had the statute codes printed on each line that the landlord had to follow so it would be impossible for him to rip me off.

When you rent in a co-op building(as i did previously), they can ask for more than 1 month security deposit because it does not fall under rent stabilization guidelines
