It does when you're using your iphone during the camping/protests/etc that last for months, which is when they claim to be jobless and broke. It costs money to maintain a data plan. You can also sell these items if money is tight to feed yourself (iphone, xbox, etc). Again, when money is tight, and you're honestly hurting in a financial sense those extras get sold and your data plan cancelled. Let's face it, you cant eat your iphone, xbox or a pair of nikes so keeping them tells me their bluffing about the dire situation they're in. IF you say you don't have money to eat, but you're blogging with your iphone it means you're lying about your situation or unforgivably financial irresponsible with your priorities out of whack.

I was laid off after 9/11, what was the first thing to go? My cel phone plan.

Also, how about living within one's means.

If the corollary to losing one's job is not begin able to afford x or y luxury, then how about not having x or y at all.

I don't have an iphone or $150 sneakers. Do I want them? Of course.
I can't truly afford them on my salary so I don't have them. Simple as that.

The problem is people work **** jobs yet want to live luxurious lifestyles.

There are some kids, not all but some, who have been so taken care of by their parents they probably don't know how to balance a checkbook. Instead they run to the bank of mom and dad who usually don't say no.

Hrrmmm. Maybe that accounts for the iphones and nikes....

A cell phone is pretty vital for looking for a job, I haven't had a land line in years and have at times used my phone as my sole source of internet access. Can't defend a new pair of sneakers (I havent bought a new pair in over a year), but an iphone/smartphone isn't strictly a luxury item.

Agreed. It's not possible to look for work without a phone and the internet. I haven't had a landline in 2 years. It was just a waste of money.

Those knockoff sneakers you really believed were Real? (Not you Skywalker...I agree with what you say here)

There's knockoff all over the place in China town etc. Good Grief...and wealthy students plan to work in the middle east, China, or some other emerging economy run by Goldman Sachs. It's no secret. Capitalism of the 50's, 60's 70's etc. is not the Capitalism of today. Remember regulations that kept Capitalism in check? You think what we have now is Capitalism and not Corporatism? And Free Trade with Deficits running in billions for America?

Young people (Wealthy) are not the ones protesting. They've already accepted that it will be their turn to run the world, GLOBALLY this time with much more ease than what their Grandfathers had. After all their Grandfathers had to obey Rules.

A home phone with internet is cheaper than an smartphone and data plan. Provided you're not out drinking all day, it's not that much of a hassle to return someone's call in a timely manner if they leave it on your home answering machine.

I agree on internet access to search for jobs, but hell no on the smartphone.

That's the old-fashioned way of thinking!

These days, the name of the game is not to be held accountable for anything (and you can't completely fault people. Our wonderful elected representatives in government do this all the time). So the concept of "means" is, well, meaningless. Discovering that you can't afford something is the cue to start whining--preferably in public.

They could be on a family member's plan. And the first thing to go when I lost my job was cable, I needed my phone to jobhunt.
