That area is very infamous for narcotics trafficking and other vices. A shame really, lots of potential due to the Concourse subway line and the walkability of the neighborhood. It's worse in your situation considering you have children, the local schools are among the worst in NYC (among the worst nation wide likely). If you were single it would be adventurous and smart economically. With children it is plain old dangerous.

That's right behind the criminal courthouse. I would not recommend Thayer are, try Jerome avenue or Gerard avenue are a bit better. I hate Sheridan and Sherman avenue.
