I'd start with the VILLAGE VANGUARD too.

Thanks for the advice! These are some good places to explore.

Any thoughts on the following:

Terra Blues
Zinc Bar
Dizzy's club (the late night session)
Smalls
The 55 Bar

Smalls is top drawer, a real dive, tiny bar, eclectic seating, awesome jazz and a place where other jazz musicians come to jam.

RIP St Nicks, what a venue that was.

Last time I was up there it was shuttered, heard rumours it was to do with the liqour licence.

Zinc Bar should hit the spot for what you're looking for. No cover up front in the "bar" section. If you want a table, there is a smallish cover. It's a great spot.

I have unfortunately not been to the Village Vangard yet, but it IS old and classic from what I hear. I believe it's more of a club than a bar though.

Louis XIV (? on the numerals) in the EAST Village was good, but not sure if they are doing live jazz anymore (last time I was in there, September-ish), they were not, due to noise complaints from neighbors (!!).

Thanks tommyc_37

I think I've decided on Zinc. Joey Morant is playing the night I'm looking at, and he sounds pretty good. Any idea if this place is usually packed? I'm going to try to make the 9:00 set.
