Hey all, I am just wondering about hair cuts, and how much y'all tip around here. The place I go in manhattan charges $17, and I tip $5 on top of that.
For xmas I did the usual $22 cut/tip, and included an extra $20 bill as an xmas tip.Is that ok? Too little? too much? thanks for any insight!

My barber is named WAHL and I paid him once 5 years ago and now he's free...no tipping necessary.

Do we have to stand on the street and tip those who take our garbage? Our children's teachers? The City Council?
(The Associated Market atop the 96th St.& Lexington station had a tipping cup at the DELI section????)
This Christmas tipping is getting out of hand.

I doubt I'd tip, but I believe the standard is that you tip equivalent to one session. So, in your case, around $20. If you had a cleaning lady coming in for $50, you'd tip her $50.

Of course, on the other hand, to me it seems like you're already tipping excessively.

I think you were very generous. If I tipped my hairdresser all year long, I would give her a little gift of some kind, but no additional money. But then, we're women.

It is customary to give the cost of one appointment to a regular barber/hairdresser/and lesser amounts to other salon personnel with whom you interact. I pay a bit more, and I tip the same for the regular visit, but I go to 1.5-2x a regular appointment with the regular stylist because she absolutely never refuses me, even if it's last-second on my end, and she does a great job.

My wife has been my barber for many years. This Christmas, I will tip her $5000 by contribution to her retirement account. Money well spend.

In a multiple chair barber shop, you never tip the owner (usually, he's the one working the chair closest to the cash register).

I, too, have never heard of a Christmas tip for a barber. But, bear in mind, I've never given a Christmas tip nor Christmas gift in my life.
