One word describing Far Rockaway...GHETTO! What a waste of waterfront property. That place needs a good dose of gentrification to whip it into shape. What a shame.

It's been like that though, its actually within the last couple of years that they have been trying to gentrify it. It was even listed in the magazine time-out ny like 3 months in a row this year and only good things were said about it.

I walk on the beach down there sometimes. The old beach streets where the bungalows are have been rehabbed in some spots. Don't dump on Far Rock there are still a lot of hardworking honest people down there. Not every neighborhood needs to be gentrified. No matter how hard people front the 5 boroughs will always be majority working class. Why be a poser and pretend Far Rock is Chelsea. It is working class/working poor. So What?

The area of Rockaway being described is not Far Rockaway. Its the neighborhoods that encompass the middle/western half of the peninsula from Arverne to Breezy Point (though sometimes Arverne is lumped in with a broader description of Far Rockaway). The 100th PCT has always had a low crime rate so certainly if there's an increase, the percentage is going to be high. You can't only look at the percentage number.

And the article says its 140% in burglaries not crime in general. A partial reason for that particular spike happened because there was a burglary spree by a group a couple of months ago that targeted the wealthier neighborhoods. I believe they were caught.

Forest Hills has seen a spike in crime due to rapes and theft. Scary!

Exactly, it has nothing to do with violent crime. With a population of over 100,000, the 101 and 100 precincts still have pretty low numbers. Its just magnified because its happening in such a small space of land.

No offense but even if an area like Belle Harbor and Breezy Point sees a "140%" spike in crime those areas would still be very safe. And I could care less if Breezy Points crime rate spikes up anyway, I hate that neighborhood and everyone living in it. It's not like Breezy Points crime spike would affect the rest of the city anyway.

I agree. That is an isolated area. Let the monkeys kill themselves.

Not sure what the backstory to that comment is but that seems rather excessive even if you did have a bad experience there or whatever.
