Depends on your budget if you're getting a roommate. What type of rent would you be looking at for a 2 BR split?

Also bear in mind, cheap and in Brooklyn close to Manhattan is NOT synonymous. Any place within a 20 min commute is through the roof or in a bad area.

You could possibly look into Midwood, which would take 30 mins to Manhattan and be cheap enough to get a 2 BR for about $1800, maybe less.

Don't be fooled about listings close to Brooklyn College that are not Midwood. There are a lot of crappy areas around it still (East Flatbush comes to mind).

Yo StarDust - Try visiting decent spots in Brooklyn FIRST like Midwood, Boerum Hill, and Park Slope before you settle for Crown Heights. All these guarantee short commute on bus or train to Manhattan. Good luck finding a suitable roommate. The 21 gun-salutes heard in Crown Heights on New Years Eve may not be your roommate's or your cup of tea...

Actually one thing that I noticed about your post that hasn't been mentioned yet is the "summer job" part. Are you planning on staying in NYC after this summer job or is this something that is only gonna be for a few months then you move back home or somewhere else?

If this is a temporary thing, then the chances of you getting a place without a year long lease will probably be extremely hard, your best bet if that is the case will probably want to look at sublets, and for the price you are looking at, you would want to look at roommate sublets and studio sublets, which you can find decent prices with those.

As for neighborhoods to look at, that all depends on you, where you are going to be working in Manhattan? What you are looking for in an area? What train lines run near where you will be working? (that one is a big one, you don't want to be making several train transfers each way,) which knowing which trains you will be relying on will also help with picking a neighborhood.

Also, as it has been mentioned here a number of times, how comfortable you feel in an area also depends on the person. Do people of different color make you nervous? (which is an honest question because if the answer is yes, then you might not want to live in an area like that.)

The cost of the apartment would definitely be suspicious simply because it could be a building that houses a number of low income or could be project housing, which you would probably want to stay away from if you can....often times not because of who lives there, but the condition the building is in...roaches are a real issue with cheaper apartments. My girlfriend lived in a project building for a short time before moving back to Oregon because she was tired of sleeping with the lights on and always finding roaches chilling in the fridge.
