It seems like every mainstream magazine has a clear cut view of NYC neighborhoods: the ultra flashy and expensive (Tribeca, Soho, West Village), the gentrified (LES, East Village, Williamsburg, LIC), the grimy hoods that are going through gentrification (Harlem, South Bronx, Bed Stuy, Bushwick), and the neighborhoods that happen to be convenient to getting to Manhattan at a fast rate (insert Northwest Queens).
It seems to coincide with whatever neighborhoods are being pushed by real estate interests. It's all part of the herding of gullible newbies who don't know anything.
This is actually why I moved to Pelham Parkway. It's under everyone's radar and mostly only real NY'ers live here, so it's very inexpensive.

Agreed, there are alot of good, safe neighborhoods out of towners are either not familiar with or are precieved to be in scary parts of the outer boroughs, so they don't come. I hope it stays that way. Real communities make NY, not gassed up real estate speculators.
