I live in Douglaston, Queens, and when I tried to order DSL from Verizon they said they only offer FiOS in my area, where the cheapest price is $50/month for 3Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream service. Not to mention that the price for this type of speed is outrageous, but I cannot afford $50 a month.
I found out that my computer does not have a dial-up modem and I don't know much about computer technology, so I wouldn't know what kind of dial-up modem to purchase or how to use it. If there were step-by-step instructions without anything left out I might be able to do it, but I don't know of any dial-up services in my area.
What other ISPs are there that offer an internet service around $10/month?
Forget dial-up. What may have been possible 10 years ago is really not conceivable anymore...you'd tear your hair out loading a web page with dial-up.
That plan Verizon has offered you SUCKS.
Here's my recommendation:
Get FIOS triple play, it gives you a terrific lineup of TV vhannels, great digital phone service with all the bells and whistles, and Internet at 15Mbps/5Mbps all for $75 plus tax. They were just doing a promo in my building and including a $300 debit card for new hookups. (Alas, I am an OLD hookup...or at least "that's what she said" Ba-Da-BOOM! )
If you can get something like this, push for a 2 year guarantee.
And then worry about what to do diffferent in 2014.
(P.S. That offfered 3 Mbps connection will not be good enought even for streaming movies tolerably.)
If all I could get would be dial up, I would do ALL my computering at the Public Library.
You might want to check and see if RCN or Time Warner offers internet service if your area. If either one does, as a new customer they might be able to give you a cheaper deal.
I cannot afford $75 a month. I don't own a TV nor a phone (I use a prepaid cell phone from T-Mobile, but after loading it with $10, I only use a fraction of that amount and the rest of it expires after 3 months).
I don't watch movies or listen to music at all; most of my time is devoted to studies, and I do research in my free time. I just need the internet for late night communications with peers or looking up information about my field of studies on the web. I don't remember AOL being that bad in the 90s.
This is terrible...I've called up Time Warner and their cheapest plan is like $50 a month for cable internet, too...I don't know anyone else in this area...

A lot of change since you've been away....
In order to have internet service you NEED to be connected in some way, either a telephone line, cable, or wireless.
You MUST pay for one of the above.
Then you will need to pay for a sevice, dial up still exists, so does AOL, and a variety of others. Cost runs $10 to $15 per month.
So the reality is that a basic landline will range in cost $25 to $50 per month.
So, together the most minimal connection and service might be $25 + $10 + tax and fees.
So, $35 plus tax and fees, which likely be $10 or $15.
$35 to $50 per month. There is just no way around the cost.
You'll also need to purchase a dial up modem, but you could probably find some one to give you one. Just ask, people have these things just lying around unused and not needed.
If where you live, there isn't an existing landline, then you'll have to pay to have one put in.
The public library is your best bet; or an open WIFI connection given your computer and/or your phone has WIFI.
If all you do is study, then spend more time at the school's library. Don't they have late hours? Just go home to sleep.
You could also ask a neighbor to share their WIFI, and offer them $10 or $15 per month.
Ah, thank you...I do spend most of my time at my school's library, I've just always disliked people and being around people in general. That's why I'd rather prefer to perform my studies/research at home. I guess no matter how much they work/study, it's true that the poor only get poorer...

if your in school, then your school should be wired for wireless all over the building. Just find yourself an empty corner in a remote hallway and have fun. This is what i used to do to get away from the library crowd.
Also, some schools may have a STUDY room that you could use and sometimes may be less crowded then the library
