My mom was approved for a 3 bedrooms and is N4 does anyone know how much longer it takes to get the apartment or what does that mean?
what development did she pick? I was approved for a 3 bedroom August 2012 and i picked the development now am on the list waiting to be called to view an apartment. I keep hearing it takes even years just to be call to see one.
Hi All! Havent been on here in a whiles, been busy with work, school, and raising my toddler son who turned 2 this past April. My last post on this thread was back in Sept 2012. I received a letter in July 2012 stating that my application had been sent to the management office of the housing project I selected in Manhattan and that they would contact me directly when apartments were available. I just received a phone call yesterday, it's June 2013, from the management office asking me to come in to view a 1 bedroom apartment on Monday. She said because my son is under 6 years old, we only qualify for a 1 bedroom but once he's 5 I can request to be transferred to a 2 bedroom and should be moved by the time he's 6. So now I will wait to see what Monday brings! I hope I like it and hopefully it's not on a high floor! So the wait time since I was certified has been about 1 year, not too bad. My priority was W1. does anyone know if you get to look at a 2nd apartment if you dont like this first one they show you? If so, let me know! thanks!
Hi ninicakes, congrats on the apt offer.please update about how your process goes for monday. Im still waiting for a 1 bedroom and been certified since January 2013. Im just patiently waiting for them to call me or write me as well....Im really hoping that 1 bedrooms do rent/become vacant fast because I really want to get out of this situation im in. Again, congratulations and I hope it works out for you. Quick question tho, u know how nycha allows u to check ur status online...im not sure if u set your account to check your status but if you did....did you status message change... like mines says certified to a development. Waiting to be contacted for an apartment. Did yours change to show you have been contacted? Also u said ur priority is w1 do u have a N priority like n3, n4, n8 as well. ..im w3 n8 and I want to know if the n8 priority counts as well or are they just going by the W1 W2 or W3 priority.

Hello Nini, this is great regarding the viewing of a second apt if you don't like that one, you have to select the one they show you because if you don't take it you have to be put back on the wiating list. This I know because my offer was a 1 bedroom back in Dec 2010 and I didn't like it much and asked when they showed me and this is what the manager told me. Good news is, once you're in there you fix it up and it looks very nice. The important thing is you've been selected for an apt and eventually they'll give you a 2 bedroom. My daughter will be 4 in July so I'm just waiting for her to turn 5 to start my transfer. Good luck!

Hey MzINeedNYCHA! I only checked the nycha online account system once and that was after finding out that i could do so via someone's post here on the boards. When i checked it tho, the status was "Selected for apartment" so that's the only status i ever saw. I think I had an N priority but it was the lowest, can't remember if that's 0 or 9, but that's what it was so they definitely called me based off of my W1 priority code. They're supposed to call a working priority and a need based priority for every 2 vacancies but it's all computerized so the selections are random.
well my appointment was so so. I got to the management office and the girl at the receptionist window proceeded to answer the phones without even acknowledging me. I stood there for about 7 mins and right when I was about to say something, an older lady walked past the window and asked if she could help me. I then told her that I was there to see an apartment. She asked if I had an address, I said no. She goes, they didnt give you an address? And i recalled that the lady who initially contacted me told me I was going to see apt. 69K, whatever that meant! Receptionist window lady goes, that is the address oh now all of a sudden you can respond to me so anywho! the older lady took my information and told me to have a seat this was at about 1:15 PM, my appointment was for 1 PM. by 1:30 PM i hadnt been called so i went to the window and of course no one was sitting there. I called them on the phone and I could hear the echo of the woman's voice who answered the phone coming from somewhere in the back. She told me that the housing assistant was with another tenant and would be with me shortly. I replied that I was on my lunch break and had to get back to work by 2. She tells me, there's no way you can make it back to work by 2 you havent even seen the apartment, you should have taken off the afternoon what? so now I'm overly agitated and I start showing it lol she's goes to the back to talk to the housing assistant and she takes me to see the apartment about 5-10 mins after my tiff
The good stuff: the apartment is on the 9th floor, 2nd door from the elevator on that floor. It's a 1 bedroom and i felt the bedroom was kinda small but manageable. you definitely have to be creative with a small space. The living room was spacious, there was a new toilet seat in the bathroom, they had just painted, and there's about 4 closets and 1 mini broom closet in the kitchen. The apartment is ready to go with the exception that 2 of the burners didn't come on when i turned on the stove. I checked in the cabinets as well for any roaches, didn't see anything so they did a decent job cleaning the apartment. The building is also right across the street from a supermarket and there are a few buses that stop right in front of the building so that's convenient. There's a shopping area down the street that you could walk to with all the major stores, so that's a plus as well. Biggest plus? it's within walking distance of my job!
The bad stuff: when we first came in the building there was a urine smell in the lobby I've always heard of people pissing in the elevators in the pjs but the lobby too when we got to the 9th floor, the custodian was mopping, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt that he was making his way downstairs to the lobby to mop also. The rent: $704 a month seems a bit high to me for the pjs but i know a 1 bdrm anywhere else in Manhattan will cost close to twice that amount. There's also a $10 charge per month per air conditioner in the apartment and you can have up to 2 a/c's. She also told me that the rents go up every year I asked if i could sleep on it and get back to her in the morning. she asked her supervisor who was talking loudly and then came in the office and asked me, are you working? I replied yes, she then said you're better off saving your money and getting another apartment unless you're okay with paying $700 a month for housing wowsers! so I have until tomorrow to let them know if I'd like to take the apartment else i'll have to sign a refusal form and then I wont be able to apply to housing again for at least a year to start the process all over again. So I'm on the fence. I would love to have an apartment of my own for my son and I, but I would hate to get locked in to paying exorbitant rent for a small apartment in the projects. I'm thinking of taking it if only for a couple of years until I can find something better for the cost. My whole wait from application to seeing the apartment has been 2 years exactly. I'll let you guys know my decision tomorrow!

Hey Jasnery! you were right on about having to select the apartment they show you, but the only thing now though, and this may be a new policy from when you went in 2010, is that if you don't select it, you have to sign a refusal form and wait 1 year to apply to housing again. so i'm in the contemplation mode I'll get an opinion or 2 from my bestie and my mom to see what they think although i'm the defining factor. I'm just worried about how much higher than 704/month the rents will go from year to year. I'll be back tomorrow to post my decision! thanks for your input!
Hi all! just to update! I decided to refuse the apartment assignment. A couple of factors affected my decision:
1.) It really stuck with me the fact that the manager in that office told me "if I were you I would save up some money and find an apartment elsewhere! Do you really want to pay $700 some dollars for housing?" Like wow! She's in the business of filling the vacant apartments with tenants but totally discouraged me from doing so! If the manager is saying this, maybe she has a point! Ive heard countless stories about NYCHA's backlog of repairs and about things taking forever to get fixed. That's totally unacceptable when you're paying decent figures for rent.
2.) The custodian was very snark with the housing assistant and told her that they had already cleaned the lobby when there was clearly a strong urine smell in the hallway and juice, amongst other, stains on the floor. If they're that callous about doing their job and nasty to their supervisor, they probably won't keep the building in the best condition.
3.) My current housing situation is not all that bad. We do live with family but other than not having privacy for say if my boyfreind comes over, I'm not dying to get out of the house already. I can manage to stay a bit longer especially with the high tuition that I'm paying for my son's nursery school. By the time he's in a free Pre-K I'll have more income to allocate towards rent and could afford a higher rent for a nicer place
4.) Last but not least was my detective work. We went back to the development that night when it was dark to check out the area. There were so many young men hanging around the park directly in front of the building. Drinking, smoking, cursing loudly, arguing, and looking up to no good. A lady was on her way towards the development with a shopping cart and I asked her about the building. She said as long as you're in your apartment around this time and you stay in you'll be fine! but didn't want to elaborate more. I asked her if the guys hanging out in the front only did that in the summer and she confirmed that's a year round thing.
Concluding, My son's welfare is most important above my privacy any day! there was a lot of behaviors that I wouldnt want my impressional kid to pick up from growing up in that development and I certainly wouldnt want to have to be confined to my apartment every night to avoid the goings on outside. The housing assistant told me that when you're able to select your own development they only show you one apartment, not like some other applicants who don't select their own development, so if I refused it, i'd have to apply again if I want to be considered for housing in the future, and they won't call me for an interview until it has been at least 1 year since the date I refused the apartment. I think I may apply again, just as a last resort in case all else fails in the next couple of years. Too bad it didn't work out for me, but I wish everyone else the best of luck in their search for affordable housing!

I did the same. I refused it. Been waiting for an interview for 2 years and three months. In 2010 rent for a one bedroom was only $560 which was great. You can't find that in NYC. But now it is 2013 and the rent is $704. The housing manager had a point. And I've been thinking about this since they raised the rent. Pay $704 for housing or save more and pay $100 extra for a nice private one bedroom that's around $800 a month. Believe it not they are out there. I've seen some in Craigslist. But even a studio would be nice and decent for $800. Hmmmmm
