Hi to all.

I'll be spending 1 month in NYC with my wife and I'm having a hard time deciding where to stay. I've searched this forum and studied all the maps, but came to no hard conclusion. Would you help me?

We're both 33 years old and like to hang out and enjoy some pubs, but we're not hardcore night life junkies. I'm a photographer and this is my first time in NY. We like to go to museums, parks, walk around and would like to know the city not as tourists, but as locals. Safety is a concern and I'd love to be able to walk home alone at late night and carry my camera around.

I'm torn between two apartments, one in Chelsea and the other on the Upper East Side. The addresses are:
W 22nd St, New York, NY 10011
E 102nd St, New York, NY 10029

Both cost the same. The Chelsea apartment is a little bigger and has big windows with a clear view. The UES apartment is newer. Both cost the same price.

Thank you all for your help.

Cheers from Brazil,

Gustavo

By ALL means, take the place in Chelsea. I cannot stress this enough.
East 102nd unless you are right on Fifth Avenue (or work at Mt. Sinai) is NOT a place you will like. (The Upper East Side isn't quite THAT "Upper." Spanish Harlem better describes it.)

West 22nd is "where it's happening," an enviable location for a new visitor. You could not be in a better part of town.

There is no real choice here.

I'm sure nobody here will disagree.

You would be an idiot for not taking the place in Chelsea.

Chelsea is safer and more convenient.

102nd is not the Upper East Side, it's East Harlem. The UES ends at 96th Street, but Carnegie Hill extends a bit north into East Harlem, below Mount Sinai. Definitely stay in Chelsea for the month.

Thank you all for your feedback. It was very, very helpful. Drop me a line if you ever come to Brasilia, Brazil, so I can pay you a beer.

Chelsea of course however I have seen an increase of out of roamers and young professionals as of late. Brasilia never been. Next time I'm in Guyana I plan on taking a trip in to Brazil places like manaus and boa vista, gotta get a apply for a visa first.
