It's not just saving the time going to Manhattan, but avoiding the hassle with luggage and transfers to get from JFK to Grand Central, which is not the easiest at rush hour. If the OP were already in Manhattan, it would be a completely different story. 95 can be a parking lot, but there are alternatives like the Merritt that do not experience the same delays as 95.

@bmwguydc you are so right on that one. Traffic is crazy and luggage is a pain in the neck. I had friends leaving from New Haven to JFK in Shady's Limousine and Airport Service http://www.shadyslimo.com all bc they DID NOT want to lug around their bags, and I do not blame them.

They said the service was inexpensive. So I am assuming getting them from JFK to New Haven won't be an issue at all. But it is important to make a con and pro list bc the headache during travel the better!

It's pretty unlikely you'd be staying anywhere in New Haven from which you couldn't walk to the campus, unless you picked some bizarre AirBnB. There just aren't that many options and they're all campus-oriented.
