Since the 2011 numbers have been finalized, I decided to calculate the murder rate in all of NYC precinct, divided by sector. I used the most recent population numbers, found here: DNAinfo.com Crime & Safety Report

Bronx:

40th: 22.9
41st: 9.57
42nd: 11.2
43rd: 10.4
44th: 12.9
45th: 4.9
46th: 15.6
47th: 13.7
48th: 13.2
49th: 2.6
50th: 3.9
52nd: 5.7

So in the Bronx we see that Mott Haven/Melrose had by far the highest murder rate. In fact, it's murder rate in 2011 was second in the entire city, behind Brownsville. We notice that the 46th precinct (Morris Heights, Tremont, Lower University Heights, Lower Fordham), aka the Alamo, reclaimed ir's former glory, coming in 2nd place. The other south and central Bronx neighborhoods ranged from 10 to 14. The far eastern Bronx precinct (Throggs Neck area) had the lowest murder rate. The Bronx in total had a bad year.

Uptown:

34th: 7.1
33rd: 9.0
32nd: 12.6
30th: 3.3
28th: 13.4
26th: 4.0
25th: 19.0
24th: 4.7
23rd: 6.8
22nd: 0.0
20th: 0.0
19th: 0.9

We have the usual suspects in Manhattan at the top. Washington Heights and Inwood reached levels it hasn't reached in years. They are back on par with Harlem. Upper East Harlem tops the list, with a murder rate that was 4th in the entire city. After East Harlem, you have both Central Harlem precincts with the highest murder rates in Uptown Mahanttan. Followed by the aforementioned Inwood and Wash Heights. The safest area was the lower Upper West side. Not one murder was recorded in 2011, congrats to them.

Lower Manhattan:

1st: 0.0
5th: 0.0
6th: 1.6
7th: 8.8
9th: 1.3
10th: 5.9
13th: 2.1
14th: 9.6
17th: 0.0
18th: 0.0

Here we see that two places are on a different level. Those places are southern Midtown precinct (Time square area) with murder rate to match Uptown, followed closely by the Lower East Side, with it's 8.8 per 100,000...a high murder rate (relative to NYC). The financial district was the safest. No murders where recorded there. I was a bit surprised with the East Village. It's murder rate of just over 1 is outstanding.

Northern Queens:

104th: 1.1
108th: 1.7
109th: 2.8
110th: 1.1
111th: 1.7
112th: 1.7
114th: 2.4
115th: 2.3

Very nice. Northern Queens was a very safe area for murders in 2011. kudos.

Southern Queens:

100th: 2.08
101st: 11.9
102nd: 4.1
103rd: 10.4
105th: 2.6
106th: 3.26
107th: 1.9
113th: 13.3

Southern Queens is an entirely different story. The area was topped by Far rockaway with a high 11.9 murder rate. Followed by South Jamaica and the Jamaica-Hollis area. This is no surprise. Those neighborhoods stick out like a sore thumb in southern Queens.

North Brooklyn:

73rd: 30.0
75th: 14.7
77th: 10.3
79th: 14.4
81st: 19.1
83rd: 14.2
84th: 2.0
88th: 3.8
90th: 4.2
91st: 1.77

North Brooklyn should be called the killing fields. The area was saturated with homicides. As usual, Brownsville had an insane murder rate of 30, easily the highest in the city. It was followed by Bed-Stuy's 81st precinct, which recorded the third highest murder rate in the city! It's 79th precinct was also horrible, and as become common place, East NY was not any better with a murder rate close to 15. Bushwick also made a comeback and was among the most murderous neighborhoods in 2011. Hipsters beware!!

Southern Brooklyn:

60th: 5.7
61st: 8.7
62nd: 1.1
63rd: 1.8
66th: 1.0
67th: 14.1
68th: 0.8
69th: 7.1
70th: 6.22
71st: 9.1
72nd: 3.9
76th: 6.8
78th: 0.0

There were a few high murder rates throughout southern Brooklyn but East Flatbush reigned supreme with a murder rate that was among the worst in the entire city. The 61st, 69th, and 71st, also had bad years. But southern Brooklyn also had many precincts that where among the safest in the city. Rule of thumb in southern Brooklyn? Stay away from the areas closest to the north.

Staten Island:

120th: 6.2
122nd: 1.0
123rd: 2.0

Not too bad. The safest borough overall. Northern Staten Island can improve some though. It's murder rate was high compared to the rest of the island.

Highest Murder rates:

1. 73rd (Brownsville) - 30 per 100,000.
2. 40th (Mott Haven) - 22.9 per 100,000.
3. 81st (Eastern Bed-Stuy) - 19.1 per 100,000.
4. 25th (Upper East Harlem) - 19 per 100,000.
5. 46th (Morris Heights, south Fordham) - 15.6 per 100,000.

Thank you Captain Obvious! No surprises here..in fact this has been consistent for many decades (especially the Bronx districts). If you want to educate us or provide an interesting perspective, how about you tell us something we DONT know!

Why are you upset at SuperMario? All he did was calculate the murder rate for last year. I thought it was interesting...I just don't get the reaction.

Yo its a new year dude move on however nice find. If I was you I would make trip to one police palza to talk to ray Kelly about murders citywide or even better go to the Fbi building next to city hall and talk to the Fbi about giving more grant money for funding the nypd to better fight crime and ending corruption in the department. Dude seriously. As for my area of mott haven? 2010 mott haven had 14 murders but last year the murder rate almost doubled. I couldn't make any explanation on why these young black kids are killing each other. I'm gonna Rep you. Also have you ever heard of Philip k Dick? I advise you to read minority report in which murder rate in nyc dropped to 0 thanks to precogs who saw murders in the future and prevented them from happening. Good book though.

Thanks,SuperMario.

One correction.....lowest Bronx rate is the 49th precinct but that is Pelham Parkway/Morris Park, not Throgg's Neck. Throgg's Neck is the 45th pct.

Interestingly,my pct( 49) has a lower rate for 2011 than Riverdale ! And although it was a bad year in most of The Bronx,Pelham Parkway and Riverdale rates are more like northern Queens, so give the Bx some credit where credit is due.

The LES always has the highest murder rate for Lower Manhattan. The relatively low population is a main reason for this so with just 5-10 homicides, the LES will stick out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of lower Manhattan. The East Village is much lower cause of higher population. I've always wondered how the crime rate would look if Alphabet City (east of First Ave) was calculated by itself.

As far as BK goes, Fort Greene/Clinton Hill definitely decreased from 2010, which is great. 77th Crown Heights is still up there, but also an improvement from the previous year when it was going crazy. Bushwick, on the other hand, is pretty much the only North BK precinct to have a significant increase. the 76th for South Brooklyn murder rate is, surprisingly, up there: it has the gentrified neighborhoods of Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill, but there is also Red Hook. Wonder if that one neighborhood was responsible for that.

SuperMario calculated the rates on a per/100,000 basis so the population of a given area is not a consideration or excuse .The LES sticks out like a sore thumb because it has such a high number of murders per 100,000 people, not because it is less populated or more populated than anywhere else.
