I am a recently single 35 year old professional woman. Looking to move back to Manhattan and restart my life after a bad divorce. Going to be pretty much on my own for a while and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good neighborhood in Manhattan for me to look for an apartment? I am looking for a cool neighborhood where it would be easier for a somewhat shy person to meet new friends and keep busy. Not looking for a family oriented neighborhood and not looking for a neighborhood that is full of partying college students. Thanks.

What's your price range? I would guess Chelsea might be what you are looking for.

Thanks for your reply. My price range is $3,000 - 3,300 a month.

Oh yeah, you would definitely be good with anywhere in Manhattan...maybe not a huge apartment by US standards, but a good apartment.

Honestly though the best suggestion is to visit a bunch of areas in Manhattan and see which one fits you the best, often times that is the best way to really see what areas you would like the most.

You can live anywhere in Manhattan for that price range in a luxury building too. I would go for UWS, UES, SoHo or battery park. All these neighborhoods have a range of demographics but they are all safe.

Thanks. I have lived in the UWS for 5 years and the UES as well previously. I got married and did the whole buy a house and move to the subburbs thing on Long Island for the last 6 years. Not looking to go back to UWS becasue I feel like it is a very family oriented neighborhood and I am single. Really looking for a good neighborhood vibe that a single person would feel comfortable in (especially on the weekends). I was thinking of TriBeCa, SOHO and Chelsea possibly. Any thoughts?

I would say to look Downtown: TriBeCa, SoHo, NoLita, Greenwich Village, West Village. The Financial District is still pretty much dead after working hours, and on weekends, though not as bad as in years past, so I would tend to skip that area. The East Village might be a good fit if you like the atmosphere.

Soho and Tribeca fit your criteria best, but even on that budget you'll be a little bit restricted. $3k/month will certainly get you a 1BR there, but it won't be as nice a 1BR as you could get elsewhere. The neighborhoods fit your criteria best, though, so are probably a good starting point for a search if you can find a bargain.

After Soho and Tribeca, I would say Gramercy/Flatiron and Kips Bay are the next-best choices. Both are young and have a lot going on. They aren't as wild as the Village, East Village or Chelsea, but they do have easy access to all of the nightlife of those areas. You'll definitely be able to afford a very nice apartment in Gramercy or Kips Bay.

Definitely would recommend downtown.
Uptown is more suitable for families and its somewhat more residential and has less of a "scene". As a newly single i personally would not want to live there

I think some hip neighborhoods that you would like are East/West Village, SoHO, Tribeca and Chelsea
Good luck!
