Astoria/Long Island City, Jackson Heights, Woodside. All great with subway to the city, and diverse. Good luck!

Jackson Heights is a bit too noisy and dirty. Even though it has shopping and restaurants, there's not much quality. Although it is getting better lately. I used to go there for steak, but the place closed down

It's noisy and dirty on Roosevelt Ave under the 7 train, but the Jackson Heights historic district, which takes up a huge area, is quiet and has nice architecture. If you are looking for steak, try La Cabana Argentinian steakhouse, La Boina Roja or La Fusta.

I live in Hoboken and work in manhattan. You might be able to find an 1800 apartment in jersey city, which would give you easy access into manhattan via the PATH train.

Where in NJ? Transportation options are excellent from Jackson heights. Don't be turned off by Roosevelt Ave. there's a lot more there if you stroll north.
